You have heard the saying, give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime. This statement is so true with business and marketing. You know, as entrepreneurs, we wear so many different hats and it’s so easy to get overwhelmed and want to get out of the weeds of your business. You hear experts say all the time that you need to free up your time and outsource. 

 

Well, today’s episode, we are going to talk about the number one thing you should never do when running paid ads and the answer might actually shock you. 

 

I am excited today to talk to you about what I think is a hot topic. 

 

Some of you might disagree with me and that is totally fine. That is what makes the world wonderful, my opinion is mine and yours is yours, but this is based upon a lot of experience. Now let’s be real. As entrepreneurs, we are super busy and we don’t have time to learn another skill set. In fact, the thought of having to take on another project, makes our heads want to explode.

Do you feel that? 

I agree that you need to be the high-level strategy and expert in your business and not in the day to day of it. I also think that is something that you grow into like becoming the CEO and leader of your business. You don’t start out that way, right? So if you don’t start out that way, wouldn’t it make sense that if you jump in an outsource before you are ready, that is a recipe for disaster. 

 

I will tell you first hand that I know this from numerous experiences, but I want to share a quick story with you about how this impacted me when I had a real estate business. So when I first started heavily investing in real estate, I purchased an 18 unit apartment building and it was a fixer-upper to say the least. Since I was new to the investing world, I went by what some guru said; hire a property manager, He says, and it’ll be hands-off. 

 

He really sold us the dream of never having to lift a finger. Oh boy and we bought into this hook line and sinker. The key to your success is you just need to find a really good property manager, which they made it sound so easy. Wow. We went through so many property managers. I mean, I lost count. It was absolutely crazy. Then one day I realized, and let me tell you, okay, some of these property managers stole money from us. It was the absolute worst experience. And the thing is,  you think you’re hiring somebody good, but you don’t really know until you’re in it. 

 

It was just such a nightmare. I realized that we just needed to take this on ourselves as much as I didn’t want to. We needed to. Now what I learned from that experience was, I didn’t know anything! I honestly didn’t know anything. So how could I hire a great property manager? If I myself had no idea what it took to be one. I was basing this off of, I saw somebody, they seemed good, they said all the right things. Therefore I was like, Oh, you must know what you’re doing. You said all the right things, right? SO WRONG, SO WRONG!

I am going to tell you if you outsource your ads before you understand what makes them successful, you are at the mercy of someone else, and that my friends is a recipe for disaster. 

 

I promise you this. If you never understand successful ad strategy, you are never going to be able to feed yourself for a lifetime. If you’re relying on someone else outside of yourself, to be the determining factor of success for your business, that is the wrong decision. 

 

That is a hundred percent the wrong decision because if you think of what actually grows your business marketing is like one of the foundations. if you don’t have marketing, if you don’t have sales, you don’t have revenue. Don’t you think that that in itself is important enough that you should learn how to do it, because if you can learn how to do ads, you can take that skill set anywhere, whether a business crumbles or an idea, like you can transfer that skill into so many other areas of your business and of your life, right? Because nothing is guaranteed. So I promise you this, if you never understand successful ad strategy, you just will never have that level of success. I know I just said that I realized right now I’m repeating myself. Repetition is the second law of learning. 

 

I want to make sure that you really understand that if you don’t understand what success looks like, you’re never going to be able to duplicate it. You’re never going to even be able to scale it. I have seen this so many times where people waste thousands of dollars, hiring expensive ad agencies or even consultants when they’re not ready solely because they think hiring an expert is the answer that they’re looking for. What we need to realize is that there is no magic bullet when it comes to paid ads. Honestly, there really isn’t. Even the most successful people have no idea what goes into successful ads until you start running them. Ads are not magic bullets. And so many times it’s actually not the ads that are failing, but it’s your offer, your creative or something else. Right. And so you’ll never understand that if you don’t take on your ads. And then you’re going to get frustrated because they’re not giving you results, the agency or whoever you hired arent giving you results when they are the experts so they should be! 

You think, “I’m not the expert. I don’t know.” That to me is such a lame excuse. “I hired you to do it.” but this is critical to the growth of your business, where your growth depends on this type of task, you need to own up and learn it. The number one thing you should never do when running paid ads is:  You should never outsource your ads before you understand yourself, how to run them successfully. I mean, how can you ask questions and have real insight if you don’t even know what the heck you’re talking about? If you have no idea, like how do you actually have an educated decision, with something this important to the growth of your business. You’re just in the dark, you know, people can get weekly reports and numbers, but if you don’t even understand? “They’re going to educate me on what those numbers mean.” That’s fine. They’re going to educate you on what those numbers mean, but you don’t really know what affects those numbers. You have no clue you’re going off by what they’re saying and what they’re trying. You don’t even know if they’re doing a good job. Just like, I didn’t know with the property managers were doing a good job until I started doing it myself. I was running into all these problems. I see that so much time with agencies, right? If you don’t even know what you don’t know, how do you know? In all honesty, you have to be able to have that insight, to know what you’re talking about. You have to be able to have real insight and have a conversation where it makes sense, where you could even say what that goal is to your high-level strategist, and you’re there when you go to outsource ads. So that you can say, you have you tried this method? I used to run this and this used to work. That’s owning that leadership. Some people think, well, if I hire an expert, they should be able to make any campaign a success. Or I only hire people who are successful at what they do so I can stay in my zone of genius. And while I agree, I also think people are so eager to get out of their business. They miss the critical growth that happens when they roll up their sleeves and get dirty. 

 

If you never have learned how to generate success with your own ads, you’re never going to be able to duplicate it. So, my friends, it is time for you to roll up your sleeves and dive into learning now. If you’ve never generated success with ads, then you’re never going to be able to duplicate it.
